Roger grew up in a timber industry family on the Olympic Peninsula. They fished, hunted, and hiked, eating and sharing the fish and game they harvested. In his 20s, he spent as many nights as possible sleeping in the dirt next to trout streams. In 1998, he decided to try to catch a steelhead. Doggedly, he keeps trying. It turns out, there’s not much he’d rather do. Owning and running a business, living in a city, and his children’s schedules make it a challenge, but fishing and the outdoors are central to his family life, as is eating the game and fish they harvest. He has been fortunate to visit a few of the best remaining fisheries and has glimpsed what can be.
